Challenge
Current booming industries rely on motion and position tracking, however, ,the accuracy of the data used is low, resulting in a poor customer experience coupled to operational misfunction. Truemetrics has developed a patentable technology addressing the technical limitations of GPS/GNSS-based location, enabling precise location & motion pattern recognition.
While having raised a first round of 100k investment, invested time in training & tuning their core technology and successfully delivered a POC in sports tech, Truemetrics needed to take their digital product to the next stage to prepare for public launch. Snow sports being the targeted market for early adoption, I helped the startup identify users’ needs & pain points to create a user experience that drives value for customers beyond the current maket’s offering. Besides, the company needed help creating a pitch deck to raise their next round of external funding to empower them to develop pilot projects.
User Research
Leading with a solution-focused approach, Truemetrics didn’t gather any tangible evidence that advanced & professional skiers could benefit from their optimized location-tracking solution. Running user research to validate this critical assumption and gain insights into the needs & pain points was critical at this point, to craft a product meeting customers’ expectations.

(01)
Qualitative User Research Plan
I crafted a user interview guide to be used during 40-minute qualitative 1:1 interviews with 10 users working in the ski industry. The goal of the research was to validate the need for advanced skiers and ski schools to use advanced metrics & 3d motion tracking visualisation to track their progress. Uncovering current habits and needs during this research allowed us to identify the key metrics users were interested in tracing.
(02)
Building an Alpha Community
These user interviews were the opportunity for Truemetrics to get in touch with potential partners & alpha community user in the snow sports industry, willing to test their POC and collaborate on further development of the product.
From POC to MVP
A POC was developed to test the technology, holding the bare minimum of functionalities and UI/UX design. My mission was to create the most critical user flows to be implemented for MVP to be tested by an alpha community of users.
(01)
Session Recording
Previously, a button on the homepage provided access to the session recording feature, which was the most frequently used function of the app. However, its placement in the information architecture made it difficult for users to find. To solve this problem, I made the UX decision to create a prominent button on the navigation bar for quick access. Additionally, the legacy app lacked a system feedback mechanism, which is crucial for keeping users informed about the outcomes of their actions and preventing errors. To enhance user trust, I introduced explanatory screens informing users about the session upload process at the end of the flow.
(02)
Sessions History
The technology developed by Truemetrics had limitations that caused the app to save each trace as a separate run, even if they were part of the same skiing session. This resulted in an endless list of runs on the legacy app's history page, negatively impacting usability. To address this, I redesigned the session history page to filter sessions by location, allowing users to access detailed information for each run. This new layout provides precise data and a map for each trace, enhancing the overall user experience.
(03)
Profile
As the app was intended for advanced and professional skiers, incorporating a statistics and analytics feature was essential for the MVP. I redesigned the profile page to showcase key metrics—such as the number of rides, total distance, and skiing time—allowing users to effectively track their progress over time.
To ensure users received accurate insights, it was crucial to log the type of snow sport practised and track the location. To facilitate this data collection, I developed an onboarding flow that guides users through providing this information seamlessly.

Dark Mode
To align with Truemetrics' brand positioning, we decided to transition the app from light mode to dark mode. This shift not only signals innovation but also resonates with a tech-savvy audience. Additionally, dark mode offers the practical benefit of conserving battery life, an important consideration for users engaging in remote snow sports.
Outcomes
In July 2023, Truemetrics raised seed funds and was backed by global tier-1 institutional investors such as Y-Combinator, Rebel Fund and Soma Capital. Following their roadmap, they targeted the logistics sector and became a trusted partner for next-gen delivery startups and industry-leading parcel giant
